Overview of the Black Crappie Regulations by FWC

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has recently approved new regulations for black crappie fishing in the state. These regulations aim to ensure sustainable fishing practices and preserve the long-term health of black crappie populations in Florida's lakes and rivers.

Black Crappie Fishing Seasons

Under the newly approved regulations, black crappie fishing seasons have been designated to better manage fishing pressure and protect spawning populations. The fishing seasons for black crappie are as follows:

  • Spring Season: From March 1st to May 31st
  • Summer Season: From June 1st to August 31st
  • Fall Season: From September 1st to November 30th
  • Winter Season: From December 1st to February 28th

During the closed seasons, anglers are encouraged to target other species to promote conservation efforts and allow black crappie populations to replenish.

Size and Bag Limits

In addition to the fishing seasons, FWC has also implemented specific size and bag limits for black crappie. These limits help ensure that mature individuals have the opportunity to reproduce and maintain healthy populations.

The new regulations define the following size and bag limits:

  • Minimum Size Limit: Black crappie must be at least 10 inches in total length to be legally harvested.
  • Bag Limit: Anglers are allowed to keep up to 25 black crappie per person per day.

It's crucial for anglers to abide by these regulations to support the sustainability of black crappie populations and contribute to the overall well-being of Florida's aquatic ecosystems.
